I've been working on repairing an antique quilt for a friend. She says it has been in her family for a long time. It had pretty much fallen apart and different family members have pieces of it.
I'm choosing some of the blocks that are in better condition and creating a mini quilt top that she can have framed. The block below will be in the finished mini quilt. I like that you can see the ticking foundation where there is fabric missing in this one.
Here are a couple of blocks that didn't make the final project.
I love that the maker used many different fabrics for the black half of the blocks.
The small quilt I am putting back together will consist of 16 of these smaller blocks. I am appliqueing the quilt to a solid fabric foundation and then stitching it in the ditch for stability (basically hand quilting it with no batting). The foundation fabric can then be stretched for framing and there won't be stress on the old quilt top.
It's kind of hard for me to see the black stitching on the black fabric so I'm taking my time with this one. Also, it could really stand a washing but I'm very afraid to do that. I'm being very careful as I handle it.
